From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćáHstā (commander, ruler; teacher), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱéh₁s-tōr, from *ḱeh₁s- (to command, rule, instruct, teach). Cognate with Sanskrit शास्तर् (śāstar).
