Inherited from Proto-Turkic *oglan, equivalent to 𐰆𐰍𐰞 (oɣul, “child”) +‎ 𐰣 (-an, “plural suffix”). Cognate with Turkish oğlan, Turkmen oglan, Uzbek oʻgʻlon, Bashkir улан (ulan), Kazakh ұлан (ūlan), Tatar олан (olan), улан (ulan), углан (uğlan).
