Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *ȫgsiŕ, equivalent to 𐰇𐰏 (ög, “mother”) +‎ 𐰾𐰔 (-süz, “-less”). Cognate with Old Uyghur ʾwykswz (ögsüz), Turkish öksüz, Bashkir үкһеҙ (ükheź), Tuvan өскүс (ösküs).
