Etymology

Two possibilities:

1. Clauson (1962) suggests that it was Derived from Sogdian 𐼈 (z, “zayn”), ultimately from Classical Syriac ܙ (“zayn”).
2. Clauson (1970) suggests that it was Derived from Ancient Greek Σ (S, “sigma”) through intermediaries.

1. A letter of the Old Turkic runic script, representing /s/, used with front vowels.
