From Proto-Anatolian [Term?], from Proto-Indo-European *smóḱwr̥ (“beard”). Cognate with Sanskrit श्मश्रु (śmáśru, “beard”), Old Armenian մօրուք (mōrukʻ, “beard”), Albanian mjekër (“beard”), Lithuanian smãkras (“chin”).
