Ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) and phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声) : semantic 牙 (“tooth”) + phonetic 合 (hé, “to close; to join”).
Coined by Zou Haifan (鄒海帆), a former professor in West China College of Stomatology in the 1920s/1930s.
