Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Sanskrit वाद (vāda, speech; thesis, doctrine). Current meanings formed from the secondary meaning of "thesis" or "doctrine", itself from the primary meaning "speech". Cognate with Hindi -वाद (-vād).

  1. Used to form names of a tendency of behaviour, action, state, condition or opinion belonging to a class or group of persons, or the result of a doctrine, ideology or principle or lack thereof. Equivalent to English -ism.
