Suffix[edit]

(-doe)

  1. (dated, formal) however, but: a suffix connecting contradictory facts
    여름 으되 날씨 아직 쌀쌀하네.
    Yeoreum-i wasseudoe nalssi-neun ajik-do ssalssalhane.
    Summer has come, however it's still a bit cold.
  2. but: a suffix introducing a contradictory additional explanation or a condition one must follow.
    미연, 나가서 친구이랑 까지 들어오렴.
    Miyeon-a, nagaseo chin'gu-deur-irang noldoe yeol si jeon-kkaji-neun deureooryeom.
    Miyeon, go ahead and play with your friends, but come back before 10PM.
  3. A suffix indicating that the following statement is a direct quote.
    그녀 "여기 앉아도 돼요?"
    Geunyeo-neun mutdoe yeogi anjado dwaeyo?"
    She asked, "Is this seat taken?"

Usage notes[edit]

  • All verbs and adjectives, including the predicative particle 이다 (-ida), take the form -되 except for 있다 (itda), 없다 (eopda) and after endings (-get-) and (-eot-), where 으되 (-eudoe) is used instead.
