Etymology

From 오 (-o-, humble suffix) + Early Modern Korean 로쇠다 (-lwoswoyta). The final part is ultimately from Middle Korean 로〮소〮ᅌᅵ다〮 (-lwóswóngìtá), a combination of Middle Korean suffixes 롯〮 (-lwós-, emotive suffix) +‎ ᄋᆞ〮ᅌᅵ (-óngì-, politeness suffix) +‎ 다〮 (tá, declarative suffix).

A more polite version of ㄹ세 (-lse). Compare the pairs 읍시다 (-eupsida) - 세 (-se), 습니다 (-seumnida) - 네 (-ne).
