Etymology[edit]

What are now vowel-final verb stems originally had an -l-, which resurfaces whenever a suffix is added. After addition of the suffix -ya, this -l- was then spirantized to -z-.

    -kimbia (to run) + ‎-za → ‎-kimbiza (to chase)
