Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Gaulish, from Proto-Celtic *ambi (around) + *Isontia, the modern Salzach. *Isontia is probably from Proto-Indo-European *h₁eysh₂- (strengthen, propel), a common component in hydronyms.
