Old English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Originally a calque of Latin Anglī-Saxōnēs. Equivalent to Angel- +‎ Seaxan.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈɑn.ɡelˌsæ͜ɑk.sɑn/, [ˈɑŋ.ɡelˌsæ͜ɑk.sɑn]

Proper noun[edit]

Angelseaxan

  1. (rare) the Anglo-Saxons

Usage notes[edit]

  • Though the Latin term from which this was calqued was common in Latin writings, in their own language the Anglo-Saxons usually referred to themselves as Engle.
  • The expected corresponding adjective is *Angelseaxisċ, though such a term is unattested.
