Why are some of the numbers XX? There should be a note explaining what this means. DAVilla 15:17, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

I didn't check to see who compiled and sorted all the names, but there are around 110 names in this list (ten or eleven more than the basic 99). The number at the beginning of each line indicates the name's position in the original ordering of the list. I don't know how the original list-maker determined the order of the names. I surmise that the original list-maker was fascinated by the number 99, so he only allow 99 names, but more names were certainly possible. There is a short story entitled w:The Nine Billion Names of God.

In our list, the names have been alphabetized on the English spelling of the names, which is why the numbers are out of order. As there are a few extra names (different copies of the list vary a little on the 99 names included), the extra names were marked as XX. Someone even threw in the name Allah, which probably should not be included. I think the list is supposed to be God's OTHER names, his epithets. —Stephen ^(Talk) 07:38, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
