Old Norse[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably from bíldr (edged weapon, bloodletting knife), thus meaning "The Edged Weapon". Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *bīþla- (axe), instrumental noun from *bītaną (to bite). [1]

However, compare *bilją (blade, axe), which could have influenced its development.

Proper noun[edit]

Bíldr m (genitive Bílds)

  1. (Norse mythology) name of a dwarf
