Changing the name of Sichuan Yi to Nuosu

Nuosu is probably the mostly widely spoken Loloish language, with around 2 million speakers. It also sometimes goes by the names Sichuan Yi or Northern Yi. There are a few issues with the current name:

  1. The biggest reason by far is that "Nuosu" is over 100 times more common than "Sichuan Yi" in the literature. Even comparing "Nuosu language" with "Sichuan Yi" shows Nuosu wins out. From looking at GBooks results, the results for "Sichuan Yi" start being rubbish from around page 4 onwards (e.g. automatically generated lists of the names of ISO languages etc), whereas the results for "Nuosu language" (nevermind "Nuosu") are relevant even onto page 5.
  2. "Yi" is a Chinese exonym, which is imposed as an arbitrary ethnic identity by the PRC on a wide range of ethnic groups, who speak many different languages. Quite a lot of Loloish languages are sometimes referred to as some variety of Yi or other, but this is the only instance where we have chosen that name as the main name for the language.
  3. It isn't only spoken in Sichuan, since it's also spoken in northern Yunnan. Given the fact that there are many different Yi languages, the name is misleading at best, especially given it isn't even the only Yi language spoken in Sichuan (e.g. Nasu).

Abstain The rationale sounds good. I personally don't know enough about this to give an informed vote, but I wanted to let you know where I'm at. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 12:12, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Given there's strong support for this, with no objections, I'm going to close this as moved. Theknightwho (talk) 11:35, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
