Slurs

[edit]

Should all the slurs that trans people are called (e.g. tranny, shemale, troon, troid, etc.) be added here as well? lattermint (talk) 16:43, 23 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

If there are a lot of them (let's say, 10), it might be worth making a separate category. Compare Category:en:Racism and Category:English ethnic slurs. Ioaxxere (talk) 19:36, 23 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Well, for one, here at Wiktionary we only really distinguish ethnic slurs with their own separate label, but the rest, like faggot for gay people, retard for mentally disabled people, are left to just offensive/deragotory. So if we are not to introduce a whole new label as something like just a slur, then there could be created categories like "Transphobic slurs" or "Pejorative terms for transgender people" or something along those lines. But on that note, there're also no lists for homophobic slurs/pejorative terms, of which I am sure there are a lot. However, there are Wikipedia categories such as w:Category:Homophobic slurs and w:Category:LGBT-related slurs, which are definitely pretty incomplete given the nature of Wikipedia entry inclusion, so our hypothetical categories would certainly be much more comprehensive.
Speaking of the number of the initial slurs in question, I think there are definitely more than 10 in total, but they are kinda different. There are pretty direct, the most "slur-like" ones like tranny, troon, transie, troid. Then there are ones that are more sex-related, or at least have such origin, like shemale, trap, ladyboy (with its caveats as explained in the usage note), dickgirl/cuntboy, chick with a dick, newhalf, he-she, shim, etc. There is like a whole bunch of these more obscure ones, more of which can be found in the category Category:en:Transgender. Then there are the TERF-ish ones like TIM/TIF, etc. So, I think the simplest solution is just to have a broad umbrella for trans pejorative terms (same for other groups like gay people, if such lists are to be created), without specifically adding "slurs" to not have to create a whole new label and to not load it too much and allow for greater comprehensiveness (like with ladyboy, which can in some places not be used derogatorily). lattermint (talk) 20:48, 23 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Do you have a name in mind? Could be Category:English transphobic terms, Category:English transphobic slurs, etc. Ioaxxere (talk) 21:36, 23 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Honestly I'm not sure, since "terms" would include not nouns directed at people (=not slurs) such as troon out or tranime, which are techincally "transphobic terms" but not slurs like we need. But I'm not sure if it's fine to have a category for specifically slurs without having the definitions say that explicitly (as opposed to ethnic slurs which have that specific label)? It may be totally ok and I'm fussing over nothing though. Also I thought something like "English pejorative terms for transgender people", but that seems kinda cumbersome and also it can include terms which may not be used explicitly transphobically such as youngshit. lattermint (talk) 23:07, 24 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
