    Within the Australianist tradition there is some terminological variation in what to call cases that span ergative and instrumental functions, and even on whether to regard them as a single case (as is done in the Warlpirist tradition) or as two distinct cases (as Dixon 1972 does for Dyirbal). Our preference would be to label the case ‘instrumental’ in all cases (then noting an ergative use in Warlpiri, Dyirbal etc.) but here we adhere to the Warlpirist terminology.
