German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Old Sorbian, derived from Proto-Slavic *xvorstъ (brushwood). Compare Upper Sorbian Chrósćicy.

Pronunciation[edit]

Proper noun[edit]

Crostwitz n (proper noun, genitive Crostwitz' or (with an article) Crostwitz)

  1. A village in Saxony, Germany, today a center of Upper Sorbian culture.

Usage notes[edit]

  • Upper Sorbian survives as a community language only among the Catholic minority settling in the triangle between Kamenz, Hoyerswerda and Bautzen (excluding all of these towns). Crostwitz, along with neighbouring Ralbitz-Rosenthal, forms the center of this region and retains around 90% Sorbian-speakers.
