Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
First attested as abbingheweer in the 13th century. Derived from a contracted compound of Old Frisian Abe (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and wier (“artificial mound used for habitation”). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name. Compare Angwier.
