Etymology[edit]
Attested as Gasthuyspolder in 1615. Compound of gasthuis (“hospital”) and wijk (“neighbourhood, quarter”). Named after the Gasthuispolder, which was named in turn for its owner, the Catharinagasthuis of Leiden.
