Etymology[edit]

First attested as wigarathorpe in 1240. Calque of West Frisian Gerkeskleaster, a compound of Gerke (a personal name) and kleaster (monastery), a reference to a former Cistercian monastery founded by landowner Gerke Harkema. Originally a compound of Old Frisian Wigar (a personal name) and thorp (farmstead, subsidiary settlement).
