Etymology[edit]
From Middle High German graht, *greht, northwestern variants of graft, from Proto-Germanic *graftuz. Cognate with Dutch gracht, West Frisian grêft (both “city canal”). The northern West Germanic development -ft- → -cht- is preserved in Luxembourgish in a small number of relict words; compare Luucht, stiichten, uechter.
