Etymology[edit]

From Old Norse Guðríðr, from Guðfríðr. The diphthong is due to the -ð- getting a j sound before r, akin to veir from veðr.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (Setesdal) IPA(key): [²ɡuyʷre̯i], [²ɡuyʷrɪ]

Proper noun[edit]

Guyri f

  1. (dialectal, Setesdal) alternative form of Gudrid.

Usage notes[edit]

Because the diphthong in this name is identical to the Setesdal pronunciation of long y, is has often been written like Gyri (i.e. Gýri).
