Usage notes[edit]

  • The German word is generally restricted to gymnastics for medical purposes or as an exercise to gain body control, flexibility, etc. Gymnastics as a competitive sport is called Turnen, except in specific contexts such as Rhythmische Sportgymnastik (rhythmic gymnastics).
