First attested as hallem in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Hallum, in turn derived from a compound of either a term cognate to Old English halh (“corner, bend”) or Old Frisian Halle (“a personal name”) and hēm (“home, settlement”). Compare Hall, Hellum and Hollum.
