Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *Harjawaldaz, from *harjaz (army) and *waldaz (leader). Compare *Waldaharjaz (Walther, Walter), composed of the same elements but in the reverse order. Attested by Tacitus, in the form Chariovalda.[1] Cognates include English Harold, French Hérault, Italian Araldo, Spanish Haraldo.
