Etymology[edit]

First attested as heleuuyrð in 840-849. Compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian uurd (artificial mound used for habitation). The first element may be Proto-Germanic *halu (sloping) or Old Frisian *hailaga (holy, sacred). Compare Helhuizen, Hell, Holwerd and Hulhuizen.
