Etymology[edit]
From Philippine Spanish, from Iloco/Iloko, the native word for the inhabitants of Ilocos, from an old Ilocano prefix i- (“from”), and either lukong (“flat lands”), or luek/look (“bay”). Some suggest that it comes from Tagalog ilog (“river”), but this is highly dubious, for it goes against the customs in naming groups and places; + English region.
