Etymology[edit]

Attested as Izabelle-sluis in 1845. Compound of Isabella (a personal name) and haven (harbour). The settlement was named for its location in the Groote Isabellepolders, which are named in turn after Isabella Clara Eugenia (1566-1633), daughter of Philip II and Regent of the Netherlands from 1621 to 1633.
