- As a Slovene and Serbo-Croatian surname, from Janeš, variant of Janež, ultimately a derivative of Latin Johannes (English John). Also from the noun janež (“anise”). Compare Yanes.
- As a Czech surname, from Janeš, a pet form of the name Jan (and thus also related to Latin Johannes).
