From Middle High German köcher, itself with analogical umlaut from older kochære, from Old High German kohhāri, itself by adaptation to the suffix -āri from older kohhar, from Proto-West Germanic *kokar, said to be from Hunnic *kukur, perhaps ultimately from Proto-Mongolic *kökexür.
