Etymology[edit]
From Ojibwe ?? / Ginebigo-ziibi - the modern spelling, Kanabecosippi - the old spelling (“Snake River”), from ᑭᓀᐱᒃ / ginebig (“snake”) and ?? / ziibi (“river”), an Ojibwe compound word for the Snake River, which flows through the county.
