Etymology[edit]

17th century, from Ottoman Turkish كاروانسَرای (karvanseray), كَروانسَرای (kervanseray), from Persian کاروانسرای (kârvânsarây), from کاروان (kârvân, caravan) + سرای (sarây, courtyard, dwelling, palace). Reanalysed as Karawane +‎ -s- +‎ -erei, whence the feminine gender. Compare the English variant caravansary.
