Etymology[edit]

Ultimately from Latin lupus (wolf) but borrowed through Basque Lope~Lop, hence the preservation of intervocalic /p/. The final /e/ may derive from the Latin vocative ending -e.[1] Compare the doublet lobo (wolf), which Spanish directly inherited from Latin.
