Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German miltau, from Old High German miltau, from militou, from Proto-West Germanic *milidauw, from Proto-Germanic *milidawwaz; equivalent to *mili (“honey”) + *dawwō (“dew”). The modern form through a secondary coincidence with Mehl (“flour”), which is due to the regular vocalic development in Low German and some dialects of Central German; compare Middle Low German mēldouwe, from Old Saxon milidou.
