Etymology[edit]

Similar to the placenames Melpes (see Melfi) and Melpum. According to De Giovanni, all are from a Mediterranean (possibly Italic, like the Oenotrians) substrate *melf, *melp, of uncertain meaning, possibly meaning "mud."
