Etymology[edit]
First attested as niewenniedorp in 1289. Derived from Middle Dutch nieu (“new”) and a compound of nie (“new”) and dorp (“village, secondary settlement”). The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oude Niedorp.
