Etymology[edit]
First attested as overscoet in 1381. Potentially a compound of over (“over, on the other side”) and schot (“enclosed space, fenced-in area”). Alternatively derived from overschot (“remainder, leftovers”). Compare Aanschot and Vrijschot.
