"Phan": From Eastern Cham Pandarang, from Old Cham Panduranga (paṅrauṅ/panrāṅ), from Sanskrit पाण्डुरङ्ग (pāṇḍuraṅga, another epithet for the Hindu god Vithoba). This element also appears in other place names such as: Phan Rang - Tháp Chàm, Phan River, Phan Rí Cửa, Phan Rí Thành, Phan Lâm, Phan Sơn, etc.
"Thiết": From Eastern Cham ꨨꨟꨭꨩꨤꨪꨔꨪꩅ (Hamū-Lithit, farming neighborhood).

According to another etymology, this place name is derived from Eastern Cham Po Thit. Po Thit is the Prince of the Princess Po Sah Inư, the daughter of the King Para Chanh.
