Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ŋja (f‌ish). Cognate with Burmese ငါး (nga:, f‌ish), Tibetan (nya, f‌ish), Old Chinese (*ŋa), Nuosu (hxe, f‌ish) and Jingpho nga. Compare Lhao Vo ngo:, Zaiwa ngozo, Longchuan Achang ŋa³¹ ʂua³¹ and Hpon tă ŋàh.

*ŋa³¹ (reduced form ŋə̆-)

  1. (only in compounds) fish

Usage notes[edit]

This root always appears in its reduced form, except in a few compounds in which it serves as the latter element, as in nɔ̠ŋ⁵⁵ ŋa⁵¹ (paddy fish, literally “pond fish”).
