Proto-Celtic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

LEIA (apud Zair) connects this with Latin dīrus (dire),[1] but the commonly accepted etymology of that Latin word (from Proto-Indo-European *dwey- (to fear)) precludes such a connection.

Matasović reconstructs Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁-ro-s, deriving it from *dʰeh₁- (to do, put, establish).[2]
