From Proto-Indo-European *bʰergʷ-, *bʰergʷʰ- (“to feed”). Cognate with Ancient Greek φέρβω (phérbō, “to feed, nourish, graze”), Sanskrit भर्वति (bhárvati, “he chews, eats, devours”).
