From Proto-Indo-European *ḱwṓ (dog). In late Proto-Indo-Iranian, *kúttas displaces this inherited word, with reflexes such as Ashokan Prakrit *𑀓𑀼𑀢𑁆𑀢 (*kutta) and Proto-Iranian *kútah.
