Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Indo-European *h₂éǵ-o-s, from *h₂eǵ- (“to drive”) + *-os (deverbal suffix). Cognate with Lithuanian ožỹs. An alternative reconstruction of the Proto-Indo-European root is *h₂eyǵ-.
