Proto-Indo-Iranian[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Unknown; possibly borrowed from the BMAC substrate.[1][2] Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *ked- (“to make smoke, soot”), perhaps cognate with Ancient Greek κέδρος (kédros, “cedar”), Proto-Slavic *čàdъ (“smoke”).[3]
