Proto-Italic[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From *djous + *patēr, corresponding to Proto-Indo-European *dyḗws ph₂tḗr. Cognate with Vedic Sanskrit द्यौष्पितृ (dyáuṣ-pitṛ́).
Proper noun[edit]
- Jupiter, the Sky Father
Declension[edit]
The attestation of the Umbrian dative 𐌉𐌖𐌅𐌄𐌐𐌀𐌕𐌓𐌄 (iuvepatre), with both parts inflected separately, suggests that the two parts were still morphologically distinct. See the declensions of *djous and *patēr.
