Proto-Muskogean[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Connected by Haas (1952) to Natchez we, wi, Tunica háli, Chitimacha ney (assumed to be from earlier *neyV, most likely *neya), and Atakapa ne, resulting in her reconstruction of Proto-Gulf *ihaɣʷañiɣa.[1]
The existence of Proto-Gulf is not widely accepted by other linguists.

- Haas (1952) reconstructs the term as *ihakanika[1], modern consensus is to use *x instead of *h though.
