Proto-Samic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Has been compared with Tundra Nenets [script needed] (sormūŋk), Forest Nenets [script needed] (xirmuŋk), but in the absense of any other known Uralic cognates, the irregular vowel correspondence between the Nenets forms, and the competing common Samoyedic term тыра (tira) (from *tïrå), a relationship is unlikely. The word shows several points of similarity with *suormë (finger), but no derivational relationship is identifiable.
