Proto-Sino-Tibetan[edit]

Etymology[edit]

  • Proto-Sino-Tibetan: xwjul (Coblin, 1986)
    • Proto-Tibeto-Burman: s-kul (Matisoff, STEDT)

In Chinese words belonging to this root appear only as prefixed or suffixed forms. Old Chinese (OC *qʰuns, “to instruct”) has the exoactive suffix *-s. Also, (OC *ɢljuns, “to agree; to be docile”) is quite possibly related to (OC *ljun, “to follow”) and (OC *sɢljun, “to follow”) (Schuessler, 2007).

Verb[edit]

*s-kul

  1. to instruct, explain, admonish
