Etymology

Formed as *dati (“to give”) +‎ *-nь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *dṓˀnis, itself from Proto-Indo-European *deh₃-ni-s, the action noun of *deh₃- (“to give”). Cognate with Lithuanian duõnis (“gift”), Latin donum, Sanskrit दान (dā́na).
